La Cérémonie de Répartition / The Sorting Ceremony

Les élèves, à Poudlard, sont divisés en quatre maisons correspondant, tant pour leurs noms que pour leurs différentes caractéristiques, aux quatre fondateurs de Poudlard, quelque part pendant l'époque médiévale.

Puisque je ne puis me résoudre à tenter un plagiat de J. K. Rowling, je ne m'amuserai pas à écrire ma propre chanson du Choixpeau. Je me contenterai de vous reproduire celle du Premier Tome.

Si vous allez à Gryffondor
Vous rejoindrez les courageux,
Les plus hardis et les plus forts
Sont rassemblés en ce haut lieu.

Si à Poufsouffle vous allez,
Comme eux vous s'rez juste et loyal
Ceux de Poufsouffle aiment travailler
Et leur patience est proverbiale.

Si vous êtes sage et réfléchi
Serdaigle vous accueillera peut-être
Là-bas, ce sont des érudits
Qui ont envie de tout connaître.

Vous finirez à Serpentard
Si vous êtes plutôt malin

Ainsi vous voilà en possession de tous les moyens de choisir votre Maison. Pensez qu'aucune gloire ne vient d'appartenir à une maison plutôt qu'une autre. S'il y a à peu près autant d'élèves dans chaque, c'est que vous allez dans une maison parce que votre personnalité s'y prête. Pas parce que vous êtes destiné à la gloire ou l'ombre. C'est votre personnage qui veut cela.
Il est vrai qu'il existe une rivalité ancestrale allant jusqu'à former des ennemis héréditaires entre Gryffondor et Serpentard. Mais c'est un standard que vous n'êtes pas forcés de suivre. Le collectif ne doit jamais masquer l'individu qu'est votre personnage.

Pupils at Hogwarts are divided into four Houses in correspondence to the four founders of Hogwarts, dating back to the Middle Ages. The students are put there based on their personality and the connection they have to the founder of their House.

Since I don't want to plagiarize from J. K. Rowling, I won't write my own Sorting Hat's song. I'll only copy the one J. K. Rowling wrote in The Philosopher's Stone (and write it whole for the pleasure of it, since it's the original English version this time):

And there you have it, every means you need to choose your House. Know that no house is better than another. If there are about the same number of pupils in every House each year, this means you are in yours because that's what your personality corresponds to. Not because you are predestined to success or failure. Your character makes the choice for you.
There is no denying the ancestral rivalry between Gryffindor and Slytherin, and that it can make hereditary enemies. But this is an example you do not have to follow. The collective behavior must never hide your character as an individual.

Sachez cependant que, contrairement à ce que je considère comme superflu et absurde dans les films, on ne peut pas savoir en voyant un élève en uniforme à quelle Maison il appartient. Mes références sont que, plusieurs fois dans les livres, Harry et ses amis se trompent, prennent une Serdaigle pour une Serpentarde, trouvent des non-Gryffondors parmi les candidats à l'équipe de Quidditch, confondent les jumelles Patil (Parvati et Padma), l'une étant à Gryffondor dans leur propre classe, et l'autre à Serdaigle.

However, know that, contrarily to what I consider as superfluous and absurd in the movies, one cannot know, when one sees a uniformed student, what House he belongs to. My references are that, several times in the books, Harry and his friends make mistakes; they mistake a Ravenclaw for a Slytherin; find non-Gryffindors among the candidates for the House Quidditch team, confuse the Patil twins (Parvati and Padma), one being in their own class in Gryffindor, the other in Ravenclaw.
